Who’s Behind 1053?

Although Initiative 1053 is sponsored by Tim Eyman, the real forces at work behind the measure are a posse of corporations – most notably big oil companies and Wall Street banks, which collectively donated close to $600,000 to force a public vote on Eyman’s scheme. StopGreed.org maintains profiles of some of the top corporate contributors to I-1053, explaining what these corporations stand to gain from the passage of the initiative:

Notes:

  • As depicted above, corporations are the largest single source of cash for Tim Eyman’s I-1053. This chart does not break out the corporations separately because there are so many. The oil, banking, and timber industries account for about ninety percent of the corporate donations.
  • Not represented in the chart above is $250,000 in loans taken out by Tim Eyman to fund Initiative 1053. While the loans count towards the total amount of cash raised, they will have to be repaid with somebody else’s money. Since Eyman doesn’t have those dollars yet, the loans are not factored into this visual.
